改革開放不僅全面恢復了中國高等教育，1978年也催生了中國學位制度的確立，1983年，中國自主培養出第一批博士，從此，博士成為無數學子心中神聖的嚮往。
2018年是中國改革開放四十週年。系列紀錄片《四十年四十個第一》旨在挖掘四十年來，人民生產生活中發生的若干個“第一”，以“第一”為切入點，反映四十年來發生在中國大地的滄桑巨變，喚起觀眾對過去歲月的共情回憶，以及對美好生活的無限嚮往。
