edX Explores China’s History (and Art)
October 28, 2013 (Source: harvard.org)
Imagine taking a tour of the Harvard Art Museums’ collections of Chinese art with our former Alan J. Dworsky Curator of Chinese Art Bob Mowry as your guide. Now imagine taking that tour from the comfort of your laptop.
This is now possible for students who enroll in ChinaX, an online course led by Harvard University’s Peter K. Bol, the Charles H. Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, and William C. Kirby, T. M. Chang Professor of China Studies. ChinaX is one of many courses available through edX, a website that offers interactive online courses at top universities to the public.
The course examines modern China through the lens of its long and rich history as a great world civilization. Through a series of course videos, Bol and Kirby guide students through China’s philosophies, politics, economy, ecology, traditions, and art. They explore the vast collections at Harvard’s libraries and museums and the expertise of faculty and scholars, such as Bob Mowry. Further, the site’s 3D photography gives students the rare chance to study objects up close (Preview a sample 3D model of our Standing Buddha).
