This song was written in commemoration of the opening of the Qinghai -Tibet railway (青藏铁路), a high-elevation railway that connects Xining, Qinghai to Lhasa, Tibet in China.

The Qinghai - Tibetan railway completed in 2006 is considered one of mankind's engineering marvel due to its elevation and terrain. The length of the railway is 1956 km and is the first railway to connect the Tibetan Autonomous Region to any other province in China. Today, passenger trains run from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xining and Lanzhou to Lhasa in Tibet. The trains are specially built for high elevation environment and have an oxygen supply for each passenger. The air in Tibet is much thinner with oxygen partial pressure being 35% to 40% below that at sea level. Every passenger train has a doctor.

The railway line passes through the Tanggula Pass, which at 5,072m above sea level is the world's highest railroad. Tanggula railway station at 5,068m (33°00′18.50″N 91°38′57.70″E) is the world's highest railway station. At the 1,338-km mark, the Fenghuoshan tunnel is the highest rail tunnel in the world sitting at 4,905m above sea level. More than 960 km, over 80% of the Golmud - Lhasa section is at an elevation of more than 4,000m. At this elevation in these latitudes, water in toilets must be heated to prevent freezing. Across the whole stretch of railroad, there are 675 bridges totaling 159.88 km and about 550 km is laid on permafrost, soil at or below the freezing point of water 0 °C.
